Determines if the new workflow for discussion dates settings (for start and end dates) is enabled for an org unit (including all the users in it). If you turn it on for the org, then only org units in the org are affected. If you turn it on for the instance, then all orgs are affected; otherwise, the old dates settings are used.

Important: For the August 2021/20.21.8 release, you can choose to opt-in to the new workflow that makes it easier for you to set visibility and posting restrictions for discussion forums and topics. If you turn on the new workflow, Locking Options are consolidated with the Availability Start Date and End Date options. For more information on these changes, see the Changes To Availability And Locking Dates For A Consolidated Dates Workflow blog post.

Enables grid view in the Discussions tool. Grid view is useful for easily identifying learner and instructor participation, unread content, new content, and themes within discussion topics. When grid view is enabled, you can control who can access grid view by granting the See Grid View role permission. This role permission is not granted by default for any role and is dependent on granting the View Discussions role permission. When grid view is disabled, all discussion topics use reading view and grid view settings are not visible to users.

Enables group filtered topics which gives instructors the option to select Group or section topic when creating topics in the Discussions tool. This creates one discussion topic with threads available according to a learner's group membership. As a result, instructors observe less scrolling on the discussion list and can manage all activity and assessment from one topic. This simplifies the grading process for group discussions. Instructors can also use the new filters within topics to view all posts, or to only view posts for a specific group. When copying groups to new courses, the group setup (grade item, assessment option, etc.) is also copied over.

Determines whether to display a visual word count in the Brightspace Editor for discussion posts. All words in a discussion post are counted, including filler words such as “the,” “if,” and “to.”

The word count is dynamically displayed to learners while they type in the Brightspace Editor (Discussions Reading View only) and it also appears next to posts they have created in the Discussions Reading View and Grid View. Learners can view the word count for their posts only.

For instructors, the word count appears on the Assessment page during the discussions assessment process and it also appears inline with the post details in the Discussions Reading View and Grid View. Instructors can view the word count for all user posts.

To view learner word counts in a non-assessment view (the Discussions Reading View and Grid View), instructors require the Edit any Post permission.

To view learner word counts in an assessment view, instructors do not require the Edit any Post permission. Instructors that have permission to assess discussions can see the word count in that assessment view.
